During last 30 years now we have witnessed a still more rigorous modification of bridge rules. I assume the modifications all have some kind of reason - and we all like to think good reasons of course.
Whats the reasons behind? Who really knows? I think the reasons are forgotten for the individually modifications. Instead we now have de-generated from Culbertson over strong features and back to whist. A very poor record - I like to think that even the responsible persons are not so proud today. In fact it looks to me that our game in general is struggling for survival.
It is not card play which is struggling of course. Card play is a very handy and enjoyable way to spend time with friends. So it always has been and so it will remain.
But bridge is much more than that. Bridge is a set of rules and commands - a language. Restricting the options to express your preferences via this language you are hurting the soul of bridge.
Anybody benefitting? Certainly not - but I see the lazy persons have an option to catch up today much easier than it was possible in my youth.
If you are in doubt I am right - look around you - they all play whist!
